Not quite sure what you mean, Fred. I think you are talking about an intermediate speaker. The word "altavoz" is a speaker as in the loud speakers you have in your stereo system. It actually literally means "loud voice" or "high voice". The word you're looking for is "hablante", from the verb "hablar", meaning "to speak".
